Kaveh Solhekol has shared all the latest information after Everton were alleged to have been found in breach of Premier League spending rules.
The Athletic reported on Sunday (14 January) that Everton and Nottingham Forest are expecting to be referred to an independent commission.
All 20 clubs will learn on Monday (15 January) whether they have fallen foul of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Asked by Vicky Gomersall on Sky Sports News [15 January, 2:02pm] if “panicking” Everton fans should be worried, Solhekol said: “If there was a deduction, Everton would defend themselves vigorously.
“It’s common knowledge a couple of clubs have been sailing close to the wind. Some people have been saying a club like Nottingham Forest could be charged.
“Everton, everyone knows about their problems over the past few seasons. They’ve already been docked 10 points and are appealing against that.
“According to the Premier League rulebook, it should all be done quickly. The whole process will have to be concluded by May 24. Then, any potential points deductions will be for this season.”
Messy situation
As Solhekol pointed out, this is all very much hypothetical. There has always been a risk of Everton being hit with a second punishment, but it remains to be seen if that is actually the case.
Under the PSR rules, teams can lose a maximum of £105million – or £35m per season – across a rolling three-year period.
If Everton’s latest accounts, which were submitted prior to the 31 December deadline, show they have lost more than that sum then they could be in real trouble – again.
Even if that proves the case, there will then be grounds to appeal – as they have done with the 10-point deduction, rather than the decision itself – which could drag on until towards the end of May.
It would lead to a rather messy situation in which the club will not actually know their final points tally until after the season ends, and nobody wants that. Again, though, this is all hypothetical and it will hopefully not come to that.
