Alan Myers has suggested Everton will not be making any signings during the January transfer window as they wait to hear if they will be charged with another breach of spending rules.
The Sky Sports journalist relayed his view that the Toffees won’t be bringing anybody in this month via X on 15 January, with the Premier League expected to make known the same day whether they are again going to refer the club to an independent commission for a profit and sustainability breach.
David Ornstein reported for The Athletic on 14 January that both Everton and Nottingham Forest are expected to be found in breach, with Everton already appealing their 10-point punishment for being found against on the same grounds earlier this season.
In response to a question about a possible second breach Myers said: “I expect there to be an announcement today yes.
“As always my advice is to wait until an official announcement, as I said yesterday I believe this week will be a significant week for Everton on and off the pitch”.
Then when asked about transfer activity he simply added: “Don’t hold your breath”.
Bleak
Sean Dyche’s men may have halted the damaging run of defeats that had dented the confidence which had built up around them with a goalless draw against Aston Villa at the weekend.
But there would understandably be hopes that the club could augment the squad at least slightly with some low-cost moves this month.
If the chances of that are minimal and the potential hammer blow of a second points deduction in the same campaign is about to be put back on the table then the picture is not positive currently.
Once again it looks like it will be the worst of all worlds for Everton supporters given the irony of still being unable to compete in the transfer market at the same time as suffering more possible sanctions for overspending, thanks to years of largess under Farhad Moshiri’s ownership that now seem so long ago.
Dyche had his side in excellent form just a few weeks ago and was apparently making light work of their first points deduction.
But a crucial injury to Abdoulaye Doucouré and Dominic Calvert-Lewin losing form has highlighted that there are still evident deficiencies in the squad that would certainly be priorities to work on in the winter window were it not for the ever-present financial woes.
And now that the authorities have changed the rules so that any possible further punishment is imposed this season as well it is, as so often, the least favourable scenario for Everton, since asking the manager and the players to overcome two deductions might be too much, regardless of form.
