Newsstand: Nick Saban’s last game at Alabama was a heartbreaking CFP loss to Michigan
Alabama coach Nick Saban has retired from college coaching after 17 years at the university. Saban won six national titles with the Crimson Tide and one with LSU. He’s widely considered as the most accomplished coach of all time.
Saban’s last game was a 27-20 heartbreaking overtime loss to Michigan in the Rose Bowl Jan. 1. The Wolverines made a fourth-down stop in overtime after senior running back Blake Corum scored a 17-yard touchdown on the first drive of the possession. That sealed the win and sparked an epic celebration at the conclusion of the College Football Playoff semifinal. Michigan went on to win the national championship with a victory over Washington Monday night in Houston, 34-13.

Walk-on Michigan senior wide receiver Jake Thaw, a 6-foot-1, 192-pounder out of Westport, Conn., has announced that he will transfer. Thaw sent a farewell message to the Wolverines’ fan base, also adding that he made the “two biggest mistakes of my life on the biggest stage, and I won’t ever forgive myself.” Thaw muffed a punt at the end of regulation against Alabama, but recovered it and held on as he took a big shot. That allowed Michigan to run out the clock and head to overtime. Many U-M fans and some of his teammates came to his defense on social media, saying that he saved the season.

“This might seem high given the uncertainty swirling in Ann Arbor with coach Jim Harbaugh given the NFL and two NCAA ongoing investigations are in the forefront. J.J. McCarthy has not made an NFL decision, and there will be heavy losses to the 2024 NFL Draft. Michigan did get Northwestern tackle Josh Priebe and Maryland linebacker Jaishawn Barham in the transfer portal, and there is enough talent to make a run at a fourth Big Ten championship depending on who stays. The schedule is absurd with Texas (Sept. 7), USC (Sept. 21) and Oregon (Nov. 2) coming to the Big House and road trips to Washington (Oct. 5) and Ohio State (Nov. 30).”
