Dallas Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Hints at Dak Prescott Becoming Free Agent in 2025
The Dallas Cowboys might be one of the most successful franchises in the world, but they appear to be dealing with some messy contract situations that could damage the team past the 2024 season. Quarterback Dak Prescott could be facing a free agent situation next season, and owner Jerry Jones has seemingly indicated that could be true.
Prescott is due for a new extension after this season, but the Cowboys are not likely not prepared to give him one. Jones has stated many times over that Prescott is a great QB, but his inability to lead the team to a Super Bowl victory is a big reason why we imagine the team wants to move on.
Jones has been adamant in his assessment of Prescott, telling Clarence E. Hill of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, “When I think of Dak, he’s one of those in the top paid that haven’t won that I think can,” Jerry Jones said. “I think there are a handful or more of quarterbacks playing who haven’t won a Super Bowl that will win a Super Bowl. I think Dak is one of them. I’m firm there.”
While the comment is a bit cryptic, it also lends credence to the rumor that Prescott could have fallen out of favor with Jones simply because he has not won a Super Bowl. His most recent comments to Ian Rapoport also indicate that the team could move on.

With no imminent deal, the Cowboys will just have to see how Prescott performs in the 2024 season. The team has also found themselves in hot water with the lack of free agent signings, which again falls back on the contracts that Jones is willing to give out.

Most of the coaches that work under coach Mike McCarthy are under contract past the 2024 season. This includes McCarthy himself and new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Jones’s style of “win now” could be affecting the overall future of the franchise.
However, it is understandable for the team to have hesitation in allowing big contracts when the result seems to always fall on an early playoff exit. Even though Prescott has failed to lead his time to the proverbial promised land, he is still one of the best QBs in the league.
Jones could just want to see what Prescott does to answer the call in 2024, which may lead to a big contract in the offseason. However, should Prescott and the Cowboys not make the Super Bowl again, it sounds like Jones will just want to blow everything up and start again.
