Tottenham: No place under Ange Postecoglou after Leeds United as Djed Spence arrives for medical in January transfer
The right-back is now set to join Genoa for the rest of the season as part of the deal which is to bring Radu Dragusin to Spurs for £25million [The Athletic, 10 January], with Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio sharing footage on 11 January of 23-year-old arriving for his medical at the Serie A side.
Spence was only able to make seven appearances for Leeds after suffering an injury immediately after his debut, meaning he has only played 23 times in total for three clubs since Tottenham agreed a deal worth up to £20million [Sky Sports] two summers ago to sign him from Middlesbrough.
He has featured for less than one half’s worth of football across five Spurs substitute appearances, while playing 10 times on loan at Rennes last term, and Robinson doesn’t see much of a route back in under Postecoglou now so the latest loan move is going to be “key” to getting his career back on track.
He exclusively told Tottenham News: “I find it hard to see where he fits into the Spurs squad under the Ange Postecoglou system. We know the way Ange is with his discipline and his relationship with the players, his man-management skills off the field.
“No matter how thin on the ground Spurs are, he’s going to bring players in in January and Djed Spence was out on loan for a reason.
“What the Leeds manager said about him as he left isn’t going to help him in any way, shape or form. And I can’t see him fitting into the Spurs starting XI, or in the squad to be honest with those issues that he’s got.
“I think the Spurs manager is open, he’s honest. He’ll tell you how it is, regardless of how thin they are on the ground.
“Look at Eric Dier’s situation. He’s quite open that he’s not going to stand in his way. So if the manager doesn’t want you at Tottenham he’ll tell you.
“Djed Spence is at a real turning point and he’s got to get his career back on track. He went to Tottenham after a fantastic season with real high expectations, high hopes, and for whatever reason it hasn’t worked there and his loans have not worked.
“I think he’ll struggle to go back to Tottenham, fit into the squad and get anywhere near the starting XI.
“So a loan between now and the end of the season is going to be key to get his career back on track if anything.”
