‘One of those three’… Liverpool are one of very few sides who could sign 25-year-old player
The Reds are having a great season this year. With January now upon us, they’re still in four competitions and looking good in all of them.
But as ever in football, some are already looking ahead to next season. By that time, there’s been plenty of rumours that Liverpool may well have added a certain Kylian Mbappe to their squad.
As the Frenchman ponders whether or not to leave PSG on a free transfer, the Reds have continued to be heavily linked. It would be a sensational move for Liverpool, who Mbappe is said to ‘really like.’
To many, the high-cost nature of the deal has long-since made it a non-starter. But speaking on ESPN FC yesterday, French journalist Julien Laurens says the Reds ‘for sure’ have a one in three chance.
“We’ve said it before, he likes the Premier League, he likes Liverpool,” Laurens reports. “He likes Real Madrid a lot more than Liverpool I think, because that’s his club. PSG is his current club and he also loves PSG. It will be one of those three for sure.”
Given the phrasing of Laurens’ reporting, you’d have to admit that it’s perhaps slightly less than a one in three chance for Liverpool and Mbappe.
For now, we’d wager that the most likely scenario is the 25-year-old staying put in Paris.
This very same scenario played out in 2022, and Kylian eventually decided he wanted to stay at his hometown club. We think this year’s saga may play out in exactly the same way.
But Madrid have always been seen as an inevitable step in the superstar’s career. And Laurens’ admission that he likes both PSG and Real more than Liverpool would still make the Reds outsiders here.
Nevertheless, it’s very interesting that they are still being mentioned at all in regards to Mbappe.
For whatever reason, the World Cup winner is seemingly an, if not genuine than at least possible, transfer target for Jurgen Klopp.
From our point of view, Liverpool should push just about as hard as they can to get Mbappe. Chances to make a signing like this don’t come around all that often.
Third choice of three they may very well be. But you have to be in it to win it and for now, the Reds seemingly still have their ticket to the Mbappe raffle.
