‘Absolutely Crazy’: pundit makes Premier League relegation claim

Everton were punished for a breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, a decision they have challenged, but won four straight games on the spin to claim them back.

However, since then Sean Dyche’s side have lost to Tottenham, Manchester City and Wolves with the result being that they are only outside of the drop zone by a point.

Despite hitting a mini-slump, Campbell – speaking on Sky Sports News (4 January, 10:20am) – claimed the Toffees will be fine in the battle to avoid the drop.

“I’ve got to say no I’m not concerned, I think Everton went absolutely crazy getting those points back, 10 points was a lot of points and they pegged them back,” he said.

“Fair enough there have been some good performances but not the results happened after that, but there’s a lot of football to play. I think Everton will be fine I really do.”

The thing that really rankles is that without the 10-point deduction, Everton are sitting pretty around the middle of the pack and just trying to pick up enough points to make sure they don’t get dragged into the mire.

But with the 10-point deduction, they are very much in the mire. That little stretch of wins really did alter the mood around Goodison Park, but some poor results since then have tempered those good times.

It is one thing for Campbell to say they will be fine, that’s a perfectly reasonable opinion based on performances, but it is another for the players to prove him right and the only way to do that is on the pitch.

There is no doubt that the next few months are going to be tense and nervy but let’s hope Everton can just rediscover their edge a little and put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three so we can all sleep a little easier.
