‘Trash-talking’ – Callum Wilson admits what really happened between him and Vicario
There was some late drama between Vicario and Wilson when Spurs beat Newcastle 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month.
The Tottenham goalkeeper and the Magpies striker were seen gesticulating on the pitch and the argument between the pair continued after the final whistle.
In his post-match interview, Wilson accused the Spurs star of a lack of respect (Sky Sports) and Vicario soon shot back, stating on social media that ‘respect is given to everyone that respects me’, perhaps hinting that the 31-year-old was the instigator (Evening Standard).
Wilson has now spoken about what happened at N17 in the Footballer’s Football podcast, which he hosts along with West Ham’s Michail Antonio.
The Newcastle star put it down to the pair losing their cool at the heat of the moment, stating that he felt Vicario had no reason to pull faces given that his side were winning comfortably.
Wilson said: “Listen, let’s just get it out of the way you know what it’s like in the heat of the moment. I was stopping the goalkeeper playing out quick and trash-talking as you do, and at the end of the game, 4-1 down, the game is done.
“I have a header and he starts pulling faces and I said ‘what are you doing that for? You’re 4-1 up relax. Show some respect. Chill’. Then he just started talking rubbish, I just switched, and I wasn’t having this, he set me off. Then you put me in front of a camera and I got annoyed.”
There was no reason for Wilson to talk about this incident again but I guess that is what you do when you have a weekly podcast. There was not much in the incident and parts of the media have blown it out of proportion.
