Sky Sports journalist shares ‘lucky’ verdict after ‘extremely harsh’ decision in Everton loss v Tottenham
That is according to Sky Sports journalist Joe Shread, with the goal disallowed due to a foul by Andre Gomes in the build-up.
Tottenham won the Premier League clash 2-1 on Saturday (23 December), with Richarlison and Son Heung-min scoring for the hosts and Gomes netting for the visitors.
“Ange Postecoglou’s diplomatic response to seeing his side cling onto a win over Everton was that Tottenham had produced a ‘different kind of performance.’ A more blunt reflection would be that they were lucky,” Shread wrote for Sky Sports.
“Everton were the more threatening side in the first half yet found themselves 2-0 down, while the decision by Michael Oliver, the VAR, to advise referee Stuart Attwell to disallow Calvert-Lewin’s goal was extremely harsh.”
The incident at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium came at a pivotal time, with Calvert-Lewin thinking he had started the comeback just six minutes into the second half, with his side losing 2-0.
But the refereeing team had different ideas, with the Toffees not finding the back of the net until the 82nd minute. By then it was too late to secure a point, with the hosts having soared into a 2-0 lead after just 18 minutes.
They did, however, have plenty of fantastic chances to earn a memorable draw away from home, but instead they left North London with nothing.
The narrow defeat leaves the Merseyside club sitting 16th in the Premier League table, just four points outside of the relegation zone.
It was not a good weekend for the Toffees, with the bottom three clubs all picking up favourable results, beginning with Sheffield United’s draw with Aston Villa on Friday (22 December).
Burnley picked up all three points with a 2-0 win at Fulham on Saturday, with Luton Town securing a 1-0 home win against Newcastle United on the same day.
