Everton have made some high-profile transfer blunders since Farhad Moshiri took his place at the head of the table.
Having waltzed into a leadership role in 2016, with the promise of a vast fortune and a brighter future, fans understandably were instantly on board.
‘We’re f***ing rich,’ we chanted. How ironic looking back.
Now hamstrung by our own failures, having thrown that transfer treasure chest out to sea, last month’s ten-point deduction marked the culmination of years firing blanks in the transfer window whilst the new stadium drained funds away in the background.
Fortunately, thanks to Kevin Thelwell, the bulk of the most lucrative failures have left Goodison Park. Although little was regained by the way of fees, the mere vacancy their exorbitant wages left was enough to steer the club back on track somewhat.
However, there is one or two who remain, as a ghostly reminder of failed past eras.
Few exemplify that more than Andre Gomes, who is still seemingly fighting to regain his first-team spot, despite having yet to make a senior appearance in nearly a year and a half now.
Well, as per reports in Spain, Las Provincias are suggesting that his time may well be up at last, putting an end to what has been described as an ‘endless nightmare’ by moving on to fulfil his ‘dreams of feeling professional again’.
Given he cost £22m, and has sat on a £112k-per-week wage since his 2019 permanent move, you would hope that his professionalism has remained sturdy.
And whilst he is likely giving his all behind the scenes to return to fitness, it is unlikely that he will disrupt a squad that Sean Dyche has moulded in his image now.
The Portuguese maestro will forever be playing catch-up, and with his contract expiring at the end of this season, he might not have time to regain favour.
Especially when he has the relentless James Garner and the top-quality Amadou Onana to displace.
Whilst he was once a smooth operator in the engine room, blending class with a deceptive power under Marco Silva, it is hard to argue with the report’s claims that injuries failed him.
Losing that explosiveness that made him so effective following his nasty ankle break, it has just felt like since then things have never been the same.
Perhaps his return to fitness could come at a good time to try and recoup a fee this January, or else lose another lucrative star for nothing in the summer.
