- Jordan Pickford ‘furious’ with Everton team-mate after what he did v Fulham, Sean Dyche intervenes
Jordan Pickford was left “furious” with Everton team-mate Nathan Patterson during the EFL Cup quarter-final defeat to Fulham, according to Connor O’Neill.
The journalist shared details on the incident in a Liverpool Echo round-up [20 December] of moments that some may have missed during Tuesday’s (19 December) contest.
Everton lost the match 7-6 on penalties after the match at Goodison Park finished 1-1 in normal time as Beto cancelled out Michael Keane’s earlier own goal.
“Jordan Pickford furious with Nathan Patterson,” O’Neill wrote of the under-the-radar incident from the second half involving Pickford and Patterson.
“Just before the hour mark, Pickford couldn’t help but show his emotions after Nathan Patterson failed to let the ball run through to him after Fulham had just cleared an Everton corner.
“Pickford gave the Scotland international a piece of his mind, while on the touchline, [Sean] Dyche appeared to ask his goalkeeper to calm down.”
Emotions clearly ran high in a game that meant so much to the Everton players. Pickford is passionate in friendly matches, never mind when there is a cup semi-final on the line.
At the time of this misunderstanding, Everton were a goal behind and emotions were therefore running high as they attempted to find an equaliser.
Once that leveller did arrive through Beto in the final 10 minutes, the Toffees were in the ascendency and looked good value to set up a two-legged semi-final early next year.
Unfortunately, though, it was not to be as Tosin Adarabioyo sunk the winning spot-kick after Idrissa Gueye had struck the frame of the goal with his effort from 12 yards.
The players cannot be blamed for a lack of effort, especially having performed so well in the Premier League over the past month or so.
And as long as any disagreements do not cross the line, there is no harm in Pickford making his feelings known to Patterson, as he did on this occasion.
