Milner and Nunez played for a season together at Liverpool, with Darwin having a mixed debut campaign at Anfield.

Ever since his arrival in 2022, the Uruguayan has split opinion. However, speaking to Jurgen Klopp for Amazon Prime Video Sport, Foster revealed that Milner is actually so ‘excited’ about the potential of his old teammate.

“I did an interview actually with James Milner about six months ago,” began the former England international.

“I said which player in the Liverpool squad do you get most excited by, has got the most raw talent? And he said without a doubt it’s Darwin Nunez. He said ‘it’s just like we’re wating for something to click, but when it clicks, wow, he’s going to be a beast’.”

“Yeah, Milly didn’t play together with Dom Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and the others,” countered Klopp. “But they have a lot of talent as well and can still make the next step. But he’s right, Darwin is like that.”

Klopp agrees with Milner

Expanding on his answer a little, Klopp went on to comment on exactly what he likes about Darwin’s game.

“He’s so important, he stays in the game,” raved the boss. “He’s super positive in and around the game. He was a bit like, aggressive, in a little bit the wrong way in the beginning when things don’t go well, now he’s completely relaxed. Aggressive but in the right way.

“I’m really, really happy with what I see at the moment and the rest will come. We are compeltely calm. Could he have scored more goals? Yes, of course. Could he have had more situations? I don’t think so, he has all the moments, now we need to work on the last touch.”

From a few things Klopp mentions during the interview with Foster, it seems as though the meeting took place just after Liverpool’s recent 4-3 win over Fulham.

Since then, Nunez has gone a further four games without scoring for the Reds. some are starting to get worried.

Although he was showing all the signs that he’d progressed since last year at the start of the season, the 24-year-old has regressed a little of late.

Without a goal in 10 games now, the alarm bells are starting to ring once again.

As Klopp says though, Nunez does keep getting in the right positions and is still important to Liverpool’s all-round game. But for all his potential and raw ability, we do need to start seeing some more tangible results.
