Bryan King doesn’t believe Sean Dyche should be in the running to win the manager of the season award despite the remarkable turnaround he’s overseen at Everton.
Despite being deduced 10 points by the Premier League last month, Dyche has galvanised his players and has won four consecutive matches.
It means that the Blues are now 16th in the table and seven points clear of the bottom three. If they hadn’t been deduced those 10 points, they would be in 10th and one point behind Manchester United.
Even though Dyche has produced amazing results, King believes the managerial award should only go to those who win silverware.
Everton are still in the running to win the Carabao Cup having reached the quarter-finals, where they’ll play Fulham on Tuesday night. The Toffees then have Crystal Palace away in the FA Cup third round next month.
King wants a trophy to go with survival if Dyche is to receive a managerial accolade.
When asked if he thinks Dyche could content for the manager of the season award, King told Goodison News: “No. He’s just doing his job.
“They’ve spent an awful lot of money at that football club, especially on players.
“Sean Dyche is a good manager and he was the right man to come in at that time. He saved them last year when they should’ve gone down but this year, under no fault of his own, they’ve been deduced these 10 points and they’re talking about a further deduction.
“I’ve always said after the 10 points, there are three or four clubs around who have given Everton a chance anyway and I think it’ll keep them up. It’ll be a big surprise to me if they go down with the way they’re going at the moment.
“If he does keep them up…I don’t like this manager of the season award. If you’re the manager of the season, you surely have to win something and also produce young players. If he can win the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup then I think his name could be thrown in, if they stay up as well. Other than that, the manager who wins, is the manager who’s done his job for the club, for the fans, for the city or town and that for me is always going to be a major factor.”
