Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant leaves following the team’s first-round playoff exit.

After suffering a devastating Stanley Cup playoff first-round loss, the New York Rangers are undergoing

a transformation. On Saturday, the team declared that it and head coach Gerard Gallant had reached a

mutual agreement to part ways.

After taking a 2-0 lead against the New Jersey Devils two weeks ago, Gallant and the Rangers looked like

they were headed to the Eastern Conference playoffs for the second year in a row. After winning three games

in a row, the Devils secured the series triumph with a commanding 4-0 victory in Game 7.

In a statement, Rangers general manager Chris Drury praised Gerard’s performance but stated that both

parties will benefit from his departure:

“I want to first thank Gerard for his work and commitment to the Rangers during his time as head coach,

” Drury stated. “I genuinely appreciate everything that Gerard has done for us over the past two seasons,

both on and off the ice, and I have a great deal of respect for him as a coach and a person. We both agreed

that a change would be advantageous following my assessment of the season and our conversations with

Gerard. I’m hoping for the best for him and his family going forward. We’re going to start looking for a

new head coach immediately.”

After two seasons, Gallant ends his Rangers career with a 99-46-19 overall record. The 59-year-old was

formerly employed by the Las Vegas

As recently as Wednesday, Gallant remained adamant about wanting to stay, despite the Rangers portraying

the decision as mutual, and he stood behind his record against what he called “one bad week.”

Though there were higher expectations for that week following the Rangers’ run to the conference finals the

previous season and their arrival in the playoffs this year with Patrick Kane followin

g a blockbuster deal at the deadline.
