‘One of the best’… James Maddison says £22m Tottenham player is so much louder than people realise

James Maddison has shared what people may not realise about Son Heung-min after he was handed the Tottenham Hotspur captaincy in the summer.

Maddison was speaking on Amazon Prime Sport as he labelled the 31-year-old one of the best finishers he has ever seen with both feet.

Son Heung-min has done brilliantly to lead Tottenham into this new era. Of course, Harry Kane left the club on the eve of the Premier League season. Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris has been replaced as skipper after losing his place in the squad.

Only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have scored more goals than the South Korean. So you may expect that Son may lead by example rather than be someone who is particularly vocal.

However, James Maddison shared that the forward is not afraid to speak his mind as he expressed how delighted he was to work with him.

“When I came in the building, you obviously know he’s a top player. He’s obviously proved it,” he told Amazon Prime Sport. “100 Premier League goals. One of the best finishers I’ve ever seen off both feet. And straight away when we got on the training pitch, Harry was still here in pre-season, but I was playing as the left eight and Sonny was the left wing, so I was buzzing off that straight away just because we were close to each other and linking up well in training.

“He’s not going to be a Roy Keane or a John Terry. He’s probably louder than you thought he would be. I think he’s actively trying. Because people listen to him because he’s such a great player, especially the young lads.”

Tottenham’s key players have stepped up in a big way this season

All of the key men within the Tottenham squad deserve enormous credit for what they have done this season. It is easy to forget now the disarray Spurs appeared to be in before the end of last season.

Antonio Conte’s tenure and the prolonged search for his permanent successor looked set to set Tottenham back such a long way.

Of course, much of the credit has to be given to Ange Postecoglou. Without him, Spurs would not be in this position. But Son’s return to form has been massive for the club.

They have missed Harry Kane nowhere near as much as many would have expected. So when you consider how Son has stepped up, it was clearly a masterstroke to give him the armband.
