Paul Robinson slams Beto live on air in Everton win v Nottingham Forest
Paul Robinson has slammed Everton forward Beto for failing to score in a “half-empty” net during the Toffees’ clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday 2 December.
Sean Dyche’s side ran out 1-0 winners at the City Ground thanks to a second-half strike from Dwight McNeil but wasted several excellent chances to break the deadlock in the first half, including a dreadful miss from Beto.
The 25-year-old skied his effort from the centre of the penalty area after Odisseas Vlachodimos failed to claim a long ball into the box and BBC Sport pundit Robinson was quick to slam the striker for failing to take the excellent chance.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (2 December, 17:52) he said: “He should score, he really should score. It’s another long ball into the box and Everton are making no apologies for the way they’re playing today, they’re getting a lot of joy from putting the ball into the box.
“The ball falls to Beto, seven, eight yards out from goal. He hasn’t got an empty net, but it’s half-empty. He should do much better.”
Needs to do better
The signing of Beto was completed with the intent of providing genuine cover and competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the number nine at Goodison Park, but so far there has been little to suggest that the Portuguese forward has the quality to fire Everton to safety.
Beto’s miss on Saturday was tough to watch from an Everton perspective as the 25-year-old had half of the net to aim for with absolutely nothing standing between him and his first-ever Premier League goal but failed to even hit the target.
If that chance falls to Calvert-Lewin there is no chance that he would fail to hit the target, even with a number of bodies between him and the goal. It is clear that Beto is currently struggling for confidence and desperately needs to score one goal to boost his morale.
Hopefully, he’ll finally open his account on Merseyside and then the goals will begin flowing for the 25-year-old. If Calvert-Lewin is sidelined for an extended period of time, Dyche will need his Portuguese forward to discover that goalscoring touch.
