Manchester United Goalkeeper, Andre Onana could be banned from playing for the Premier League, even if he turns down the chance to play for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Onana is expected to be called up by the Indomitable Lions for the tournament scheduled between January 13 and February 11 next year.
If Cameroon enjoys a good tournament, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper could miss six matches for his club in the Premier League and FA Cup.
However, Onana is nervous about losing his place under Erik ten Hag to Turkish understudy Altay Bayindir while he is away and may try and swerve the tournament.
But if Cameroon selects him for their squad, Onana could be prohibited under FIFA rules from playing for United anyway during the AFCON.
As reported by The Sun, FIFA’s regulations state: “A player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant association, not entitled to play for the club with which he is registered during the period for which he has been released or should have been released… plus an additional period of five days.”

Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana was inconsolable after his side’s loss to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday September 21, 2023.
Erik Ten Haag’s side arrived at a Allianz Arena on the back of a string of poor results in the English Premier League.
Redemption did not come in Europe after the side fought hard but lost to the hosts 4 – 3.
Onana was blamed for a number of the goals even as collegues consoled him on the pitch after the game.
At the post match press conference, the Cameroonian international sought to take responsibility for the outcome of the game.
“It’s my responsibility, because of me we didn’t win — and I have to learn from it. I have a lot to prove, because to be honest my start in Man United is not so good,” he is quoted to have said.
“It was me who let the team down,” he added.
