Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson makes ‘very bad’ admission after Luton defeat

Crystal Palace were disappointing as they fell to defeat against newly-promoted side Luton Town, and manager Roy Hodgson has expressed his disappointment in his side.

Palace fell to a 2-1 loss despite Michael Olise scoring an outstanding goal, in a game in which Palace were the favourites to win.

A late goal from Jacob Brown sealed the points for Luton, whilst Palace also lost Eberechi Eze and Cheick Doucoure to injury during the disastrous 90 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Hodgson lamented his side’s inability to convert chances, as well as the poor defending for the winning goal.

“It was a good goal from Luton’s point of view,” Hodgson stated.

“It was a very bad goal from our point of view to concede, especially at a time we were playing well.

“When we got the equaliser, we should have perhaps looked at consolidating or even winning the game.

“Suddenly, we found ourselves behind again at 2-1 and we had to throw everything forward in the last 10 or 15 minutes.

“We created some chances. Congratulations to Luton for holding on and for the spirited performance they gave throughout the game.

“Both teams put a lot into the game – there is no doubt about that,” he continued.

“When we’re playing against a team who are 2-1 down and desperate for the points and to get their first win, I expected for us to have a lot of the ball.

“We created some very good chances. But in the end, it was the crossbar, the goalkeeper and the post which kept us out.”

Although there was an element of bad luck with the injuries and missed chances, Palace were somewhat toothless in front of goal.

Despite firing in eight shots on target, Palace struggled to create big chances beyond Olise’s stunner, and this was emblematic of the side’s struggles going forward this season.

Palace have scored just 13 goals in 13 league games, and at times the football on display has been turgid. Whilst this may be justified to bring defensive solidity at times, when the side is also poor at the back, fans will be rightfully unhappy with what they are seeing.
