Tom Brady had some pretty strong words to say about the state of the NFL on Monday. Despite hanging up his boots for the final time less than a year ago, the legendary quarterback already feels that the level has deteriorated since his departure.

“I think there’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL,” declared the former New York Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star on the Stephen A Smith Show at the beginning of the week.

Brady explained how he thinks the fundamentals of the game are changing, something he’s not happy about. “Offensive players need to protect themselves,” began the former quarterback.

“It’s not up to a defensive player to protect an offensive player. A defensive player needs to protect himself. I didn’t throw the ball to certain areas because I was afraid a player was going to get knocked out. That’s the reality.”

Despite many agreeing with Brady’s frustrations, to some extent the comments have come as a bit of a surprise, especially given that Brady retired only a matter of months ago and that the quarterback himself benefited from the precise regulations he criticized- especially the roughing the passer penalty rule.

Fans can expect plenty more Brady opinions to come. He’s due to start his role as a broadcaster with Fox in 2024.

The Kansas City Chiefs embarrassing loss on Monday Night Football dropped them from the top of the AFC standings, but that was far from the only drop at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs fan drops a pass from Mahomes
The Chiefs have a drops problem, and it seems to be extending to the fans, as Patrick Mahomes learned in infuriating fashion. As he departed for the locker room after the game, he threw his glove to Chiefs fans in the stands, only to slip through the fingers of the supporters.

Whether it was intentional or not, we do not know. But either way, it encapsulated the frustration of a season where things just have not clicked for the Kansas City receivers, and gave social media ammunition for jokes that wrote themselves.

Key drops doom the Chiefs in scoreless second half vs Eagles
KC wideouts continue to drop Mahomes passes at an alarming rate, like the one from Marquez Valdes-Scantling when he was wide open downfield with 1:42 left in the game for a would-be go-ahead touchdown.

After leading 17-7 at halftime, Kansas City went scoreless in the second half for the third game in a row, allowing the Philadelphia Eagles to come back for an ugly, 21-17 victory.

Mahomes’ receivers, including Travis Kelce, dropped five passes, increasing the Chiefs’ season total to 26 drops, most in the NFL. Justin Watson only caught 5 passes on 11 targets, with a critical drop on fourth-and-25 that ended the game despite a heroic throw from Mahomes that would’ve been enough to convert a first down on their final drive.

“They’re undefeated when they win the turnover battle,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said of the Eagles. “Then you add the penalties to it, a couple of drops to it. We’ve got to take care of that.”

The lack of quality wideouts has been an issue for the Chiefs since they traded Tyreek Hill last year, and it has haunted their MVP quarterback in notable prime time losses to the Lions and Eagles this season. However, Mahomes refused to make excuses or throw his teammates under the bus after the loss, stating that he could have made better throws in the post game press conference.
