Two Liverpool transfers already embarrassing Gary Neville as Man United claim backfires

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville made a bold claim about Liverpool’s midfield before the start of the season, and it’s already backfiring on him.

With Liverpool currently leading United by seven points in the Premier League table, Neville’s remarks have drawn attention and scrutiny. While the Red Devils managed a shaky 1-0 home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers to kick off their league campaign, they have since suffered three defeats in their last four matches, causing them to plummet down the standings.

In contrast, Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool has only dropped points in its away match against Chelsea on the opening weekend, securing victories against Newcastle United, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Wolves since then.

Before the start of the 2023/24 season, Neville expressed doubts about Liverpool’s midfield signings, particularly Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. He boldly claimed that Klopp would prefer to have the midfield options available to Erik ten Hag at United.

The Sky Sports pundit stated (via the Liverpool splashsoccer ): “When you look at the actual players, let’s take United as an example: Fernandes, Mount, Casemiro, Eriksen. I think Klopp would swap his midfield now for United’s.”

Ironically, it is United’s midfield that has appeared weaker compared to Liverpool’s this season. This weakness was evident in the recent 3-1 defeat to Brighton, where the Seagulls effortlessly exploited United’s midfield area.

Reds fans have taken pleasure in reminding Neville of his remarks, with Jamie Carragher also joining in on the banter. Carragher shared a clip of Neville’s comments on his Twitter/X page, recalling the initial debate they had on Sky Sports’ ‘The Overlap’ show in August.

This isn’t the first time Neville has made a pre-season prediction about Liverpool that has backfired. Prior to the 2019/20 campaign, he famously declared: “I can guarantee you as clear as day, Manchester United will win again.
