Kylian Mbappe only destination may be last place Liverpool want him to go

Some Liverpool fans are getting excited by the ‘dream’ transfer scenario once again – as recent rumours suggest Real Madrid have shifted their attention from Kylian Mbappe to Erling Haaland.

The Frenchman, the Reds and Los Blancos have been intertwined as part of a transfer story dating back to his former years at AS Monaco – finances being the only problem in all of it for a player who at 18-years-old commanded a £165.7m fee and now reportedly earns close to £900,000-per-week.

2023’s summer window witnessed a storm kick up surrounding the player’s future in the French capital. Mbappe apparently refused to re-negotiate terms beyond summer next year – chiefs at his club believing a pre-contract agreement had been struck in secret with Real.

Ultimately that situation was resolved as PSG realised they rather needed their star man. He’s resumed play as normal, scoring 12 goals and grabbing one assist in 14 appearances this campaign whilst remaining on course to depart the French capital for free in summer 2024.

With Real Madrid’s pull and financial might – which have seen them beat Liverpool to the signings of Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni in recent years – many would expect his destination to be the Spanish capital. Yet apparently this won’t be the case, if the latest speculation is to believed.

Days after Real were forced to publish a club statement denying negotiations behind PSG’s back, it has been suggested by Spanish media they are out of the race for good.

As a result, a gap could open – and there have been tentative claims that Liverpool could be the ones to capitalise in the absence of their 2022 Champions League final opponents. Just last week L’Equipe reported on a long-term desire to bring the 24-year-old to Merseyside – one that has apparently seen contact never cease between the Reds and the player’s representatives – and now Football Insider have also weighed in on a similar theme.

Under the Bosman ruling – no fee involved, only wages – if the willingness is there on the player’s side to strike an agreement then it remains to be seen how Anfield chiefs would react. He has certainly been open to Liverpool in the past, revealing talks that took place in 2017 with his ‘mother’s favourite club’.

But any opportunity to discuss the arrival of the 2018 World Cup winner has been downplayed by the Reds’ staff – particularly Jurgen Klopp, as he has been at the forefront of questioning given his role as manager.

In 2020 the boss distanced himself from Mbappe and others such as Jadon Sancho who were at the time forging their way in Europe. “Look, I cannot answer those kinds of questions without creating headlines the next day, I know that’s what I don’t want to do,” he said. “I love them all and there’s a few more players out there. They are all exceptional players. The players they are now is because of their own attitude, because of their skills and all that stuff. I love watching them but I have no problem that I never trained one of them.”

Then over three years later, earlier this year during the madness that resulted in Mbappe’s punishment by PSG, it was suggested a loan move to the Premier League was a possibility that would be explored. “We laugh about it. I can say that I think he’s a really good player, but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all,” Klopp commented. “I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now, but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it. But it’s possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me, but that hasn’t happened in the eight years that I’ve been here. That would be the first time.”

The German’s financial worries were an echo of the club’s former director of research, Dr Ian Graham, as he hailed the French forward the best on the continent a month prior. After his exit, he stated: “Any statistical model will tell you that Kylian Mbappe is the best player in Europe at the moment but unfortunately, financially, he’s out of Liverpool’s league. We’re looking for the best-performing players per pound.”

Acting as the final piece of the puzzle in this dream transfer scenario, AS are believers that instead of the PSG player, Madrid are instead expected to focus all efforts on prising Erling Haaland from Manchester City.

The Norwegian, described as their secondary priority, may about to be promoted to chief target as the report states Bernabeu chiefs are willing to pay his £175m release clause next summer.

But it could open up the ‘nightmare’ scenario – where City move for Mbappe as a replacement. Back in June, Pep Guardiola was coy on his stance regarding the France star, merely telling reporters: “You know which team he wants to go to.” Were Madrid to be off the table, however, then Mbappe could be up for grabs. And City may be one of the only sides in world football who could afford him.
