Everton appeal: Super silk Laurence Rabinowitz admits ‘it hurts’ to be a ‘proper fan’
Laurence Rabinowitz has called it a “privilege” and an “honour” to represent Everton in the club’s appeal against their points deduction.
The “super silk” [Times, 10 January] responded to an email from Toffees fan and legal director Paul Heron, who shared it via Twitter on 26 February, after the ruling that reduced the sanction down from 10 to six, calling Rabinowitz an “absolute gent” for his reply.
The KC praised Everton and the fanbase as a “proper club” with “genuine” fans after successfully arguing down the size of the punishment.
Rabinowitz wrote: “It has been an absolute privilege and indeed an honour to be able to represent your wonderful Club. A proper club with authentic, genuine and passionate supporters.
“I hope your granddaughter will be able to witness as much success in the future as you have over the years, and that she get as much fulfilment and joy (and perhaps a bit less heartache) than you will have had.
“(I fear at least some heartache is an inevitable consequence of being a proper fan. It hurts when things don’t go well.)”

Most Evertonians will already be holding the club’s legal representation in high regard after his work in helping lift them away from the relegation zone, for now, and his words following the judgment will likely only increase that.
If he can produce similar results when the next profit and sustainability hearing comes around this season then he will no doubt have cemented his place among the affections of the fanbase.

It surely shouldn’t have come to a situation where supporters are celebrating legal work in an appeals hearing in the same way they might celebrate a result on the pitch, but through a combination of poor management at the club under Farhad Moshiri and poor governance overall by the Premier League that is where the Toffees have found themselves.

Sean Dyche and the players now have the (temporary) relief of being back up to 15th and five points clear of Luton Town in the drop zone, but will know there could be further twists to come.
One major hurdle has now been cleared at least, with the outcome far from perfect but a lot better than it had been.
