Tyler Herro’s breakout as a star is not surprising for Miami Heat

Tyler Herro has taken a step to the next level in the tier-list of NBA players. Herro has been far and away the best player for the Miami Heat to start out the 2023-’24 NBA season. Yet, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

There were signs that Herro was ready for the next step and he has already shown that he will be a player to be reckoned with this season and moving forward.
Evaluating Tyler Herro’s early-season breakout
Herro has been on a mission to start the 2023-’24 NBA season as he has been the Heat’s best player. Through six games, Herro is averaging 25.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 45.3% from the field and 45.1% from the three-point line.
Most importantly, the 23-year-old guard ranks as the 14th-highest player in the NBA in terms of points per game. Herro has taken the jump compared to the 2022-’23 NBA season and already has two games with 30-plus points.
The Heat guard has been starting next to Kyle Lowry at the two spot, despite the latter not providing much on the offensive side of the floor. It has been a stellar beginning to the season for Herro and one that should continue moving forward.
Obviously, he will likely regress from shooting 45.1% from beyond the arc but it shouldn’t be crazy to think that he will hover above 40% when the season ends. To those who have been paying attention, none of this should be coming as a surprise.

Why Herro’s breakout should have been expected
Herro has been a part of trade rumors since he was drafted by Miami in 2019. Right away, he was mentioned in packages for former Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook before he was moved elsewhere.
Since that point, Herro has been involved in rumors every season. From Donovan Mitchell to Kevin Durant, he survived when no one expected him to. However, last offseason felt different.
Damian Lillard requested a trade specifically to the Heat and Herro was supposed to be the main centerpiece of a deal. Unfortunately for Miami, the Trail Blazers front office was motivated to sabotage such plans for Lillard.
Unfortunately? Well, maybe not when you look at it from a different perspective. Herro has used all of these rumors as motivation to grow better as a player. The endless criticism and work have turned him into one of the NBA’s best young star players.
It is something that Heat center Bam Adebayo thought about Herro before the start of the new campaign. This is a new Herro and one that everyone should have expected when Lillard was officially traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Tyler Herro’s impact on Miami Heat moving forward
Herro survived the Lillard talks and while it may not have been due to the Heat, he still managed to stay with the team that drafted him in 2019. Now, Herro’s emergence as one of the NBA’s best scoring guards has changed the outlook in Miami.
Before, the Heat were viewed as a team with no future as Dion Waiters, James Johnson, and Hassan Whiteside led the way. That has transformed into a trio of Herro, Adebayo, and Jimmy Butler with the first two players being under 30 years old.
The former Kentucky Wildcats guard has worked endlessly to make sure he becomes the best player possible. Well, Herro has certainly developed well and the hope is that it turns into more wins sooner rather than later.
The Heat have a record of 2-4 to start the 2023-’24 NBA season and it’s not Herro’s fault. Without him, the franchise could very easily have no victories yet. It hasn’t been smooth sailing but it came together well against the Washington Wizards in the team’s last game.
Herro will continue to serve as Miami’s leading scorer and the hope is that he can hover around 23-25 points per game. If so, the Heat’s chances to make another run to the NBA Finals will increase. Sure, it may take some trades but Herro shouldn’t be involved unless it is for a top NBA player.
The 23-year-old guard wants to prove that he shouldn’t be a player involved in rumors anymore. Herro has continued to work and if this early-season breakout is any indication of what is to come, Miami should be excited for the future.
