Breaking: Miami Heat Hire Ex-Player As Vice President Of Basketball Development….
ade has returned to the Miami Heat, but this time in a different capacity – as an executive. After a spectacular 20-year playing career with the Heat, the last 16 of which he served as team captain, Haslem has been named the franchise’s new vice president of basketball development.
This move follows Haslem’s long-held intention to contribute to the Heat’s front office or ownership group after retirement. He was born and raised in Miami and has been an integral part of the Heat’s success for the past two decades. The Heat’s President, Pat Riley, expressed his pleasure at Haslem’s choice, saying, “Born and raised in Miami, UD has been an integral part of the Heat’s success for 20 years.” It’s fantastic that he’s chosen to build on his wonderful legacy here in Miami, where he belongs.”
Udonis Haslem is one of only two players to have appeared on all three of Miami’s NBA championship teams, the other being Dwyane Wade. He was the franchise’s all-time leading rebounder and a 16-time team captain during his successful career.
Haslem’s time with the Heat spanned several eras, from the 2006 championship with Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade to the LeBron James-Chris Bosh-Dwyane Wade era, which resulted in two more NBA championships. He also witnessed the modern period, led by Jimmy Butler, in which the Heat constantly outperformed expectations and reached the NBA Finals twice. Notably, he became the oldest player to play in an NBA Finals game when the Heat faced the Nuggets in June, just two days before his 43rd birthday.
Haslem, who announced his retirement last offseason, had not had a huge on-court influence in recent years. He appeared in 102 regular-season games in his final eight seasons, with 25 appearances in his last four. His status on the roster, however, was premised on his function as a de facto coach and mentor, embracing the “Heat Culture” and teaching the team mentality that began with Pat Riley.
In his new capacity, he will continue to contribute to the Heat in a variety of ways. Working closely with the coaching staff, mentoring both current Heat players and those assigned to the team’s G League club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and representing the organization are among his responsibilities.
