Why are England fans booing Jordan Pickford?

Pickford, who has been England’s first-choice goalkeeper in three major tournaments, has earned his 61st cap. Despite his achievements, his ties to Sunderland, Newcastle’s arch-rivals, have led to a negative reception in Newcastle. He joined Sunderland as a child and has remained connected to the club, which has contributed to the hostility from Newcastle fans.
In a 2020 match, Pickford was blamed for two goals as Everton lost 2-1 to Newcastle. This happened right after he shushed the Newcastle fans, who were mocking him by dressing as T-Rexes to ridicule his appearance and smaller stature for a goalkeeper.
