Crystal Palace loanee shines in 1-0 win on Saturday

Crystal Palace academy prospect Owen Goodman is currently on loan at Colchester United and the goalkeeper put in a huge performance to help his team win on the weekend.

He helped his club win 1-0 against Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

So, why was the performance of Crystal Palace loanee Owen Goodman so key to his club picking up a win? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Goodman has gone on loan to League Two side Colchester United for one season, and the player, who also features in the England youth squads, looks to be a bright talent.

His performance in the 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley emphasises that the 19 year-old has a bright future ahead of him and Crystal Palace should be excited.

Goodman picked up the highest rating on the whole pitch, with a nine out of 10, as he made six saves, with five of these being inside the box, per SofaScore.

He also made 54 touches, three clearances and completed 25 of his 37 passes. It was a top performance, which saw him gain a place in the EFL Team of the Week.

This was clearly a top performance from the young goalkeeper, and it is really important for him to continue playing well whilst on loan in League Two.

The Eagles have put a lot of money into their academy and we need to start seeing young talents impress and come into the first team sooner rather than later.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi has been given some minutes this season, but perhaps not enough by manager Roy Hodgson.

Goodman is clearly enjoying his time at Colchester United and his clean sheet on the weekend was his third of the season.

No doubt it is probably best that the young player is out on loan at the moment, following the comments manager Roy Hodgson made about the young players involved in the match against Tottenham on Friday night.

If Goodman continues to excel over the next couple of years then the Eagles could no doubt have a top goalkeeper on their hands in the near future.
