Tommy Doyle opens up on ‘incredible stepping stone’ at Sheffield United
For a lot of Sheffield United fans, not re-signing Tommy Doyle in the summer is now seen as a huge mistake by the club.
United apparently wanted to sign Doyle but budget dictated that nothing happened. Instead, United went out and signed his Man City teammate James McAtee again, while spending money on Vini Souza and Gus Hamer to bolster the midfield.
In the end, Doyle moved to Wolves as part of the deal which took Matheus Nunes to The Etihad.
However, Doyle has been speaking to The Athletic and still found time to speak fondly of his time at Bramall Lane.

Speaking to The Athletic, Doyle admitted that the move to United was something of a stepping stone.
However, he views his time at the club fondly, and you can almost tell he’d have jumped at the chance to come back if it was on offer.
“It was incredible. I had a great time there. The lads, the staff and the fans were so good with me. When you achieve stuff it obviously makes things a lot better but it was a great period for me and a great stepping stone to lead me to where I am now,” Doyle said.
Doyle is yet to start for Wolves in the league but has come off the bench in recent weeks. He could well feature at Bramall Lane this Saturday, when United host the Molineux side.
Sheffield United News View: Doyle over Souza any day of the week
There was an element of excitement when we signed Souza but when you look how the season is going and his impact on the team, you have to say we’d have been better with Tommy Doyle.
Yes, the numbers might not have added up and wages were likely a bit more than Souza is getting.
However, this was such an obvious deal to make that it’s almost baffling it didn’t happen. Prince Abdullah should have ensured the funds were there for this, end of. Doyle was ideal to come alongside or instead of Ollie Norwood.
We’ve now missed out and are left wondering what might have been. Of course, Souza might turn out to be a good signing in the end.
But right now, 99% of Sheffield United fans would probably say they’d prefer to see Doyle in the red and white over the Brazilian.
