‘Dark Times’ – BBC pundit moots ‘Major’ Everton problem with DCL
Everton: ‘Major problem’ with Dominic Calvert-Lewin mooted at Goodison Park
Pat Nevin has admitted that it’s dark times for Everton in regard to the off-field issues surrounding the club.
Speaking to BBC Sport on Tuesday (31 October), the pundit said it’s not far off being a “relegation sentence” for the Toffees if they are found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s spending rules and docked 12 points.
But after the Blues secured a 1-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday (29 October) through a Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal, he believes they “might just survive” even with a points deduction if they can keep the England international fit.
“There were reports earlier this week that the Premier League will suggest Everton be docked 12 points if they are found guilty of breaking Financial Fair Play spending rules by an independent commission,” said Nevin. “That is not far off a relegation sentence.
“These are dark times considering the club’s existing debts, the soaring costs of their unfinished new stadium, their limited squad, defeat to Liverpool last weekend, the relegations battles of the last two seasons… I could go on.
“In short, the Toffees needed their old, much-loved boss David Moyes, to go light on them at London Stadium. Compassion usually stops at the white line and with the referee’s first whistle in football, but this time Moysie’s side were flat, and Everton capitalised.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin wrapped up the points with one swing of his right boot. A natural scorer was the difference once again. Everton’s other major problem is keeping ‘DCL’ fit. If they do that, they might just survive, even with a multiple-point penalty.
It was a much-needed win against West Ham at a time when Everton were really suffering on the back of Bill Kenwright’s death and the reports around the hearing.
It’s so far unknown what will happen to the Toffees if they are found to have breached the Premier League’s spending rules and it will no doubt be a real concern for everyone associated with the club.
There have been questions raised about 777 Partners and the potential takeover as well over the past couple of weeks to not help matters.
But for a brief period, all of those worries went away when Calvert-Lewin scored at the London Stadium to hand the Blues all three points.
He is going to be vital in their hopes of beating the drop in this campaign, whether that is with or without a potential points deduction.
