Everton booked their place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Burnley at Goodison Park on Wednesday (1 November).

James Tarkowski combined with fellow former Burnley player Dwight McNeil by heading in the latter’s cross for the Toffees’ 13th-minute opener.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – a surprise starter in many ways – had a goal ruled out early in the second half, but Amadou Onana added a second for Everton in the 53rd minute.

The hosts added a third in added time through Ashley Young’s tap-in, which was set up by substitute Beto.

Jordan Pickford – 6

A mere spectator for pretty much the whole of the game. In fact, Pickford did not have a single save to make on what was one of his quieter night in an Everton shirt.

Ashley Young – 8

Managed to stay on the pitch, which was an improvement on his most recent outing against Liverpool. Was not really needed in defence as Burnley offered so very little, but he made his presence felt at the other end with a late goal to show he’s not past it just yet.

James Tarkowski – 9

As far as games against your former club go, they do not get much better than this. Not only did Tarkowski keep a clean sheet – the first port of call for any centre-back – he also scored the breakthrough goal and effectively assisted another. Superb all-round display.

Vitaliy Mykolenko – 7

Registered a team-high five interceptions and always seemed to be on top of his man when Burnley did occasionally look to attack. Also linked up well with McNeil in a promising partnership down the left-hand side.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 7

A superb clearance in the first half was the young centre-back’s highlight of the night. Had little to do otherwise, but always looks composed when he is needed. Everton have a real talent on their hands in Branthwaite.

Jack Harrison (Off for Nathan Patterson ’80) – 6

Started lively enough, but this was one of the Leeds United loanee’s quieter games as he had no shots and registered no key passes. Still, you would expect him to retain his place out wide for the foreseeable future.

James Garner – 7

There was no standout moment for Garner today as such, but a lot of his work was done off the ball. He made two clearances and an interception, including a key block inside the box to prevent what would have been a simple tap-in for a Burnley player. Very much undroppable.

Amadou Onana (Off for Idrissa Gueye ’78) – 7

Like midfield partner Garner, a lot of what he does is perhaps underappreciated. No starting player on the field could boast a better pass accuracy return (90.5%), and the Belgian also registered a team-high two attempts on target, one of those finding the net [WhoScored].

Dwight McNeil – 8

Perhaps fired up by being booed by his former supporters, McNeil superbly assisted Tarkowski’s breakthrough goal and played in another delightful ball that was eventually helped in by Onana.

Arnaut Danjuma (Off for Abdoulaye Doucoure ’67) – 3

Given a chance to shine by Sean Dyche, but it is fair to say Danjuma did not make the most of it. The Villarreal loanee did not manage a single shot of any sort, did not complete a dribble and, well, did not do much of anything [WhoScored]. A return to the bench awaits against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Off for Beto ’67) – 7

The striker has now proved that his injury problems are behind him with this the sixth successive game he has started. Had a goal ruled out for a perceived shove on Dara O’Shea, but he otherwise showed brilliant movement and hold-up play in another impressive outing.

Substitutes

Beto (On for Dominic Calvert-Lewin ’67) – 8

Would have been disappointed not to have started, but he had a couple of lively moments and provided the late assist for Young’s goal. Not enough to dislodge Calvert-Lewin, but further chances will come.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (On for Arnaut Danjuma ’67)

Given a breather today, rather than being dropped, and helped keep things ticking over in his 20 minutes or so on the field. Will not feel at all threatened by Danjuma taking his place.
