Ally McCoist and Andy Townsend have both been quick to rave about Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s first touch for the winning goal as Everton beat West Ham United.
The Toffees ran out 1-0 winners at the London Stadium on Sunday (29 October) with the England international’s second-half strike the difference between the two teams, as his 50th Premier League goal saw Sean Dyche’s side secured their third league win of the campaign.
While the defensive display from Everton has earned a majority of the plaudits from pundits, McCoist and Townsend were quick to praise the striker’s work in the build-up to the goal, especially his initial first touch.
Speaking on talkSport on Monday (30 October, 8:35) McCoist said: “What about that initial first touch from Calvert-Lewin. Do you know what I did? The boys were going to the Rangers game, I actually when they got back in, I showed them it, that’s how good I thought that touch was.
“I took it all the way back, I thought it was a tremendous goal.”
Townsend was quick to agree, saying: “It’s that sort of delayed drag across the front of his body just to give him a yard and it wasn’t the greatest shot but it doesn’t matter, it’s in the corner, it’s accurate. Great goal.”
Moment of magic
Calvert-Lewin has always had the knack of being able to produce an all-important moment of magic to drag Everton to a win and while the Toffees’ defenders also played their part at the London Stadium, his first touch and finish was truly special.
McCoist knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a good striker, so for the presenter to admit that he rewound the match just to show his family the Everton forward’s first touch shows that it was truly a special moment of magic.
In just five Premier League starts this season, Calvert-Lewin has managed to score three goals and finally looks to have conquered his fitness issues, which could be integral to the Toffees’ hopes of avoiding relegation to the Championship this season.
Last season, Dyche’s side were unable to find the net consistently while the 26-year-old was sidelined with injury for much of the campaign and a similar was true in the early matches of this season.
Keeping him fit and firing will be crucial over the coming weeks and months as there isn’t another player at Goodison Park capable of scoring the goal that Calvert-Lewin did on Sunday.
