Nathan Ferguson suffers latest serious injury since Albion exit
Nathan Ferguson left West Brom in January 2020 and has been totally luckless during his three and a half years at Crystal Palace
Former West Bromwich Albion defender Nathan Ferguson has suffered the latest of an extensive list of injuries during his most recent attempted comeback for Crystal Palace this week.
Full-back Ferguson played his last game for Albion at Cardiff City in January 2020, having caught the eye of new manager Slaven Bilic in pre-season 2019 and making himself an important member of the first-team – which would go on to secure promotion – within months.
Albion academy product Ferguson joined Palace that following summer upon the expiry of his contract, but it has been, as boss Roy Hodgson has previously described it, a ‘tragedy’ of a spell with the young defender having suffered one serious set-back after the other. Palace kept him on at the end of his deal last summer for a further year, but Ferguson is no closer to being available to Hodgson.
This week Ferguson played 90 minutes in Tuesday’s Premier League International Cup for the club’s under 21s, but The Athletic report that he suffered a serious hamstring injury and is set to be sidelined for another lengthy period as a result.
“I was really pleased to see him play,” Hodgson said on Thursday. “He played well but I heard today he picked up an injury during the course of the game but I don’t know how serious it is.”
It’s not the first hamstring injury Ferguson has suffered since joining the Eagles, while in that time he has also been ruled out for spells with Achilles, knee and foot issues. It’s been a totally luckless near four-year time for the defender, who was such a promising prospect during those few months in an Albion shirt.
He has managed just eight minutes of Premier League football – they came on Boxing Day in 2021 at Tottenham – while he has only managed to play 90 minutes for the club’s under 21s on one occasion since joining over three years ago.
