Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has praised Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero as the best defender he has ever faced.

Cristian Romero has been in superb form this season and has now received big praise from Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen.

The Argentinian would probably admit that he wasn’t at his best in the second half of last season.

Romero won the World Cup with Argentina but then seemed to have something of a hangover as Spurs stumbled through the final months of the campaign.

That has all changed this season; Antonio Conte has gone, Ange Postecoglou is in and Romero is back to his very best in a Tottenham shirt.

Romero may still have some detractors in England and we can understand that.

The former Juventus man does still need to take some rash challenges out of his game, but he appears to have one big fan in Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen has become one of the top strikers in world football having fired Napoli to the Serie A title last season.

The Nigerian will be a man in demand in 2024 and he has now moved to praise Tottenham centre back Romero.

As quoted by Pazzi Di Fanta, Osimhen has now named Tottenham star Romero as the best defender he has faced.

The pair locked horns three times in the 2020-21 season as Romero turned out for Atalanta.

Osimhen did also praise Roma’s Chris Smalling but hailed Romero for nullifying him by being so close to him at all times.

“Romero is the toughest I’ve faced,” said Osimhen. “The first time I played against him I got the ball deep several times and he was always behind me. I also had many duels with Smalling,” he added.

My view: Romero thriving with extra responsibility at Tottenham

Romero really needed to come on strong this season and he has done it whilst being given a leadership role.

Ange Postecoglou decided to appoint Romero as a vice-captain to Son Heung-min and the Argentinian has been exceptional ever since.

Romero is really stepping up as a leader, which is vital for Tottenham given that Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie are in their first Premier League campaigns.

Pedro Porro is still learning about the Premier League too, so it was imperative that Romero really took on a leadership role in a new-look Spurs back line.

Romero has done just that and there will be plenty of other strikers out there who feel similar to Osimhen.
