Liverpool now officially have a midfielder who’s worth just as much as Kevin de Bruyne

Liverpool now have a midfielder who can rival Manchester City supremo Kevin De Bruyne.

So say transfer market and valuation experts Transfermarkt, anyway. In their latest update of valuations on players from across the globe, Reds No.8 Dominik Szoboszlai is ranked as having the same value as Man City’s superstar Belgian.

Both players are given a value of around £60m. That’s reportedly an increase of around £17m for Szoboszlai, who Paul Merson says has been ‘outstanding’ this season [Sportskeeda], while De Bruyne has dropped almost £9m since the previous update.

This puts the two players in joint 21st position in terms of the Premier League as a whole.

Szoboszlai is the second-highest Liverpool player on the list, behind only the £65m-rated Luis Diaz. Meanwhile, Erling Haaland sits comfortably in top spot, the Norwegian hit-man said to cost at least £156m for anyone willing to try and tempt City into a sale.

Although it’s sometimes difficult to determine just what lists like these are based on, it does give a good indication of how the outside world sees Liverpool players.

At various points over the past three or four years, the top spots in every such ranking would include several Reds players.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane would regularly be amongst the highest-valued in the league, alongside most of the City team.

But with Mohamed Salah also – quite unbelievably – now languishing as a £56m player (excuse me?!) Arsenal have taken Liverpool’s spot as being perceived as having the second strongest squad.

This is shown in there being four Arsenal players rated as being more valuable than Liverpool’s highest value player, and one – Gabriel Jesus – being the same as Diaz.

We’re not being wanting to be funny, but what makes Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli worth more than Salah, Alexander-Arnold, Alisson et al. What have they ever achieved in the game?

We can just about understand Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka being there – English tax is alive and well – but the rest? Forget it. Come the end of the season, we expect this table might look a little different. Szoboszlai’s value is only going one way, just like many in this Liverpool squad.
