World Cup winner gets 2-year ban for doping offense

Papu Gomez tested positive for prohibited substance in test conducted last year

Argentina’s World Cup champion Papu Gomez has been handed a two-year ban for a doping offense, said a report on Friday.

Gomez tested positive for a prohibited substance in a test conducted in November 2022, just before the commencement of the World Cup tournament, Spanish media outlet Relevo reported.

The winger explained that he inadvertently took syrup from one of his children without consulting a medical professional to recover from an illness.

The 35-year-old footballer previously made appearances for Atalanta, Sevilla and Monza. He helped Argentina win the 2021 Copa America and 2022 FIFA World Cup and claimed the 2023 Europa League trophy with Sevilla.
