Everton are still yet to discover what kind of sanctions they may receive from the Premier League, but a potential problem awaits the Toffees.

Everton are currently facing charges for breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, and may face sanctions as a punishment, following overspending under Farhad Moshiri.

Depending on what punishment they receive, they may face significant problems within the squad and on the pitch.

Everton’s squad depth could be in jeopardy

A report from The Times has now claimed that Everton could be facing a transfer embargo if they are sanctioned by the Premier League.

Everton currently have eight players set to depart at the end of the season, and if they are handed a transfer ban, they would not be able to replace any of them, not even with free agents.

“Punishments range from a points deduction, a fine and a transfer embargo. The latter could cause Everton problems given they have eight players out of contract at the end of the season,” the report stated.

“Loan deals for Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma expire next summer, while Abdoulaye Doucouré, Séamus Coleman, Ashley Young, Dele Alli, André Gomes and Andy Lonergan will reach the end of 12-month deals.”

Everton’s transfer problem

If Everton are handed a ban this summer, and lose all eight players, they could find themselves in serious trouble.

Whilst not all of them are key players, most will need replacing if they were to leave, and although Everton could still field a first XI, their depth would be seriously weakened.

Losing experience in Coleman and Young, as well as creative quality in Harrison and Danjuma, and three central midfielders in Dele, Gomes and Doucoure, all at the same time would be a disaster which could confine Everton to an eventual relegation.

They will now hope that an embargo is not handed to them, and may be bracing themselves for an unfavourable outcome.
