The five-time All-Star and 15-year NBA veteran cleared his waivers Monday afternoon and signed with the Heat for the remainder of the season shortly thereafter. Now, the former Cleveland forward was in Miami for a contract and plans to start training with the new team immediately.
Love’s first official practice with Miami is scheduled for Thursday after the team returns from the All-Star break, and he could make his Heat debut as early as Friday in Milwaukee. Love is champion of the NBA, Olympic champion and champion of the FIBA World Cup. He ranks 42nd on the NBA three-pointers made chart with 1,536, which is 19th among players currently in the league.
Hot center Bam Adebayo — who hoped Love would come to Miami if the Cavaliers signed him — said he plans to call coach Erik Spoelstra on Monday to start a conversation about how he and Love could play side by side.
“Spo is smart. He figures out how we’re going to do things,” Adebayo told The Associated Press. “It’s exciting. We’ve got new legs on the team. We’ve got a guy like Kevin Love who’s been through these wars and came back 3-1 (Cleveland vs. Golden State in the 2016 NBA Finals). It’s a battle. -proven a guy who won. That’s big for us.”
“He’s smart, he stretches the floor, and that’s the kind of guy you can learn from when you have a guy like that in your corner,” Adebayo said. “He and UD, two different paths of life, but now they are walking the same path. Having guys like that helps me tremendously. He is a wonderful person in every way.”
The Heat enter the All-Star break in seventh place in the Eastern Conference at 32-27, five games back of Cleveland for fourth place. The top four teams in each conference have home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. and the top six in each conference avoid a game to determine seventh and eighth place.
