The Boston Celtics have made another high-profile addition. After a busy summer that saw Boston acquire Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, along with assistant coaches Sam Cassell and Charles Lee, the franchise has signed Jeff Van Gundy as a senior consultant.
The former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets head coach boasts a 430-318 record in his career.
Van Gundy has spent most of the last two decades working as a broadcaster with ESPN. However, after being released at the end of last season, it would appear the Celtics have taken advantage of such an intelligent basketball mind being a free agent.
According to MassLive’s Brian Robb, Van Gundy will split his time between the Celtics and the Maine Celtics and will operate under the Celtics basketball operations department.
“Van Gundy will be working under basketball operations and splitting his time between Boston and Maine, Boston’s G-League affiliate, according to a source,” Robb reported.
With their latest addition, Boston now has one of the most talented coaching staffs, along with one of the top rosters in the NBA, and are well-positioned to make a run to the NBA Finals. Of course, health, cohesion, and schedule will all affect how successful the team’s season ends.
Nevertheless, Brad Stevens and Joe Mazzulla have put the Celtics in the best possible position heading into the new season, and that’s all anybody could ask for.
