Table toppers now want to buy 27-year-old Manchester City player in January

Tottenham now want to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in January as Pep Guardiola loses faith in the 27-year-old.

That is according to Football Transfers.

So, what is the latest on Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the England international has only made two Premier League starts since his £45m move from Leeds in July 2022.

Phillips was also overlooked by Guardiola despite Rodri picking up a three-match ban, with Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis preferred in the Premier League.

A story from iNews claimed that the Manchester City No.4 is increasingly likely to leave the Etihad Stadium as a result of the situation, with Everton and Newcastle said to be keen.

Now – however – Tottenham are taking an interest.

Football Transfers believe Ange Postecoglou wants midfield reinforcements at Spurs, and is alert to the situation involving Phillips.

The 58-year-old has dropped Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from the starting XI since taking over from Antonio Conte, so perhaps a different type of midfield profile is wanted in N17.

Manchester City should be wary of selling Kalvin Phillips to Tottenham

In usual circumstances, a sale to Spurs would be a sensible option for Manchester City.

However, Tottenham are currently top of the Premier League, and find themselves in a strong position to challenge the Citizens for the title.

Therefore, Guardiola should be wary of strengthening a direct Premier League rival, even if the Spaniard doesn’t feel Phillips is good enough to start for Manchester City.

According to The Athletic, the 52-year-old thinks his No.4 is particularly struggling when it comes to receiving passes from the backline and playing the ball quickly.

A summer sale to Tottenham would be fine, but handing Spurs a boost midway through a title race would not be a wise decision – it could ensure Postecoglou has the squad depth to mount a serious challenge.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Phillips looks set to leave Manchester City this winter.
