’Quicker than I thought’: Darren Bent says players simply can’t go past one Tottenham player
Darren Bent has admitted that he didn’t realise how quick Micky van de Ven is for Tottenham.
Modern-day centre-backs need that all-round package to their game if they are to survive at the top-level, including defending in open spaces and one-v-one.
That’s something Micky van de Ven has been thrust into following his summer transfer from Wolfsburg to Tottenham, with Darren Bent adding that opposition players simply can’t get past him, as he told Premier League Productions (07/10/23 at 2:45 pm).
One of the biggest issues facing Spurs last season was their defence, including the decline of their experienced centre-half, Eric Dier.
Whilst Cristian Romero wasn’t the issue, what was in and around him was, hence the call to bring in Micky van de Ven.
And amid all the hype and expectations around the Dutchman this summer, he is living up to it all, as of this moment.

“Him and Romero are forging a really good partnership,” said Bent. “I tell you what, he is quicker than I thought. I knew some people I spoke to who said he was quick. But he is quick!
“I have seen people trying to run him, but they can’t get on the other side. Defensively he has been great and he popped up with a goal as well. It’s a really, really good signing for Spurs.”

One of the main reasons why Tottenham are sitting top of the Premier League is because of their central defenders.
With the likes of Dier being pushed aside, Ange Postecoglou has ran with Romero and van de Ven as his new pairing, and as of this moment, they are proving their worth.
Yes, there will be worry about the quality behind those players, but if those two can remain fit, then Spurs will continue to march forward.
