Louis Saha has raised concerns over Richarlison and Son Heung-min’s combination for Tottenham
Louis Saha believes that Tottenham “definitely” need another striker in January “because the combination between Son Heung-min and Richarlison isn’t working too well at present”. Parting with Harry Kane ahead of the 2023/24 season, Ange Postecoglou initially persisted with Richarlison as his striker before electing to move Son to a central role ahead of the 5-2 win over Burnley.
Adding to their forward line in the summer with 20-year-old Alejo Veliz signed from Rosario Central and very much seen as one for the future, Spurs also have fellow summer arrival Brennan Johnson who can operate through the middle if required. One player who does look set to be linked with a January transfer to a top Premier League club is Brentford’s Ivan Toney, with Tottenham likely to be in the headlines regarding the prolific striker.
Excelling for the Bees ever since his move from Peterborough United and now currently serving an eight-month ban from football for breaching Football Association betting rules, the England international will be available to play again from the middle of January. Mentioned in regards to a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the past, Saha believes that a Spurs switch is a possible move for Toney and that the 27-year-old has the necessary qualities to play for any club.
“Ivan can adapt to any team,” said Saha in an interview with Betfred. “He’s mentally very strong, so I’m confident that he will make the right decision for himself. He can play in any team because of how strong and technically gifted he is. Ivan’s also very mobile and has the right formula you need to play as a striker for any club.
“Manchester United certainly need more options up front as all the top clubs have various options to choose from. Tottenham also definitely need another striker because the combination between Son Heung-min and Richarlison isn’t working too well at present, so that’s another possible move for Ivan.
“All we know is that a lot of teams will be interested in signing him in January and I’m sure he would be a key player at a big club rather than just being another member of the squad.”
Tottenham have made a very impressive start to the Premier League season and currently sit one point behind league leaders Man City. Unbeaten in their first seven games and picking up notable wins over Man Utd and Liverpool as well as claiming a 2-2 draw at Arsenal, some people have mentioned Postecoglou’s men in regards to a possible title challenge.
That was put to Saha and he gave his verdict on whether or not Spurs could still be in the mix come the final few months of the campaign.
“As I’ve said before, you’ve seen teams win the title when they’ve not been expected to. Leicester City are the best example of this,” explained the Frenchman. “I’m not necessarily saying that if Tottenham won the title it would be a surprise because any team of their quality could win it.
“The Premier League is the most difficult league in the world, so regardless of whether you’re on a ten game unbeaten run or not, all it takes is one key player to be out of form or be injured for the season to destabilise them. I hope that doesn’t happen for Tottenham because I’ve been so impressed with the intensity they play with and I’ve been very impressed by the performances of James Maddison.
“They have the right formula at this moment in time and there’s a belief that they can win the Premier League this campaign, however the season is a marathon and you need to have the consistency, the stamina and the arrogance to know that you can beat any team that gets in your way.
“Arsenal were brilliant last season but at the end of the day, there’s a different component that you need to hold out in the title race and at the moment, Manchester City and Liverpool have that in their DNA and will be the two main contenders to win the Premier League title this season.”
