Guglielmo Vicario has proved to be a safe pair of hands for Tottenham Hotspur but he is also becoming a guiding force within the squad.

The 26-year-old made the move from Empoli in the summer to become Spurs’ first new main goalkeeper in 11 years after Hugo Lloris announced his intention to find a fresh challenge, although the former captain was unable to and has since remained behind the scenes at the club.

Vicario has made the No.1 position his own though under Ange Postecoglou. He has kept two clean sheets but conceded seven goals in his first six Premier League matches although nobody is pointing the finger of blame at the Italian. He has been a steady presence at the back, a good communicator with some spectacular saves already in the bank, while his distribution with the ball at his feet has been excellent.

The goalkeeper experienced his first North London Derby on Sunday and was praised for a performance that brought important saves from Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka, as well as impressive short passing in the face of onrushing pressure from the Arsenal attack.

He also provided a calm pair of hands from Arsenal set pieces. He was beaten twice on the day, but could do little about Cristian Romero’s deflected own goal or Saka’s penalty.

Some eagle-eyed supporters might have noticed some important moments off the ball as Vicario played a key role in motivating and communicating with his teammates in big moments.
