Tottenham’s woeful derby record laid bare as Postecoglou eyes statement win

It’s the North London derby this weekend and Tottenham head to their bitter rivals in great form but with history against them.

Their record away at Arsenal is appalling ahead of this weekend’s showdown but the early signs suggest this is a very different Spurs team to many of those who have travelled across North London.

Tottenham are unbeaten in the Premier League so far this term, winning their last four, scoring 11 goals and conceding just three in those games.

So, you could argue that if any Spurs side stands a chance of breaking this record away against Arsenal, it’s this one.

But the challenge is most certainly daunting – Tottenham have won just one of their last 30 top-flight away games against the Gunners.

That win came during the 2010/11 season. On that day, Spurs came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 thanks to goals from Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Younes Kaboul.

It’s a day that Tottenham fans still hold onto, waiting patiently for the next time they manage to beat the Gunners in their backyard.

There have been 12 away league games at the Emirates since then and Spurs have only managed four draws.

And in recent times, games home and away against the Gunners have proven tricky for Tottenham.

Mikel Arteta’s side are looking for their third consecutive win over their city rivals, which would be the first time they have managed that since a run between 1987 and 1989.

Arsenal have also won four of the last five, which is as many victories as they had in north London derbies over the previous 16.

So it’s a fixture that the Gunners are starting to reassert their dominance in.

However, Tottenham will travel to the Emirates knowing a win would be a huge statement.

Postecoglou’s Spurs have earned a lot of deserved plaudits so far this season, but this will be a proper test and is likely to prove how far theyhave really come.

But if they were to win, it will be a day their supporters won’t forget.
