Daniel Levy reveals huge Harry Kane transfer clause as Tottenham handed return boost
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has revealed the club have a buy-back clause to re-sign Harry Kane after he joined Bayern Munich this summer. The England captain completed a £100million move to the Allianz Arena just days before Spurs began their Premier League campaign.
After Kane signed a four-year contract with Bayern – Spurs released a lengthy statement thanking the 30-year-old for his time at the club over the past 19 years. The statement read: “The club can confirm the permanent transfer of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.”
Levy’s comments as part of the statement read: “We sought over a long period of time to engage Harry and his representatives in several forms of contract extension, both short and long term. Harry was clear, however, that he wanted a fresh challenge and would not be signing a new contract this summer.
“We have reluctantly, therefore, agreed to his transfer. Harry’s achievements and records say everything about the player, and throughout his 19 years at the club, Harry has been a model professional, on and off the pitch and an inspiration for young players who dream of following in his footsteps.
“I should like to thank Harry for everything he’s done for us, all the memories, all the records – we wish him and his family all the best for the future. It goes without saying, he’s always welcome back. He’s a much loved and valued member of the Spurs family, forever in our history.”
Kane has had a huge impact at Bayern already but has admitted he is still keeping a close eye on his former club as Ange Postecoglou prepares his side for the North London Derby this weekend. Speaking ahead of the game, Kane said: “Fantastic start [for Spurs], I am always keeping an eye on them and I think I will for the rest of my life.
“I am really happy to see the team playing the way they are and of course to see the fans happy as well is a great thing. I am sure they will be excited to keep it up and they have a massive game coming up, so for sure I will see how they get on over the course of the season.”
Now, at the Tottenham Hotspur fans’ forum on Tuesday evening, Levy has revealed that Spurs do in fact have a buy-back clause inserted in Kane’s contract at Bayern – handing them the chance to potentially re-sign the 30-year-old in the future. The 30-year-old ended his time with Spurs as the clubs’ top goalscorer, but fell short of breaking the all-time Premier League goal scoring record still held by Alan Shearer.
The buy-back clause could see him return to England and look to break that record if Spurs act on the opportunity given to them in his contract. However, there is no indication at what point in time this clause may come into effect.
