Jason Cundy thinks Mauricio Pochettino is playing Chelsea 20-year-old in the wrong position
Jason Cundy suggests Mauricio Pochettino is making a big mistake by playing Levi Colwill at left-back in the Chelsea XI.
It’s been a very interesting beginning to the season for Levi Colwill, who’s started all five Premier League games so far.
The 20-year-old youngster is a very highly-rated defender to become the latest success story from the academy at Cobham.
He forced his way into the first-team plans this campaign after some eye-catching spells out on loan, including last year at Brighton as a ball-playing centre-back.
Therefore, it’s been interesting to watch the English talent start the season for Chelsea at left-back rather than as a centre-half. Mauricio Pochettino’s systems are fluid and you may be able to pin him in different roles in and out of possession, but it’s pretty obvious he’s operating as a conventional left-back on the ball.
TalkSPORT pundit Cundy was left frustrated by the decision to use Colwill at left-back in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Bournemouth in the league.

“There’s a couple of strange things that are going on. He’s playing Levi Colwill left-back and he had [Ben] Chilwell on the bench. I don’t know whether Chilwell had a knock,” Cundy told talkSPORT.
“Chilwell naturally gives you that balance, he’s an attacking full-back. I felt we were lopsided at the weekend [against Bournemouth].
“Down our left, there was just nothing. I felt a bit for [Mykhailo] Mudryk because there’s no back-up, nobody is overlapping him.”
Colwill should be in Chelsea’s best line-up. We agree it’s hurting the balance of the side using him at left-back, though.
We’ll see a lot more of him influencing the ball from his preferred centre-back position, so it’s time for a change this Sunday against Aston Villa.
Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella or Ian Maatsen provide suitable options at left-back. Meanwhile, Colwill should partner Thiago Silva or Axel Disasi in the heart of defence.
