The national media have reacted to Tottenham’s comeback against Sheffield United

Tottenham made their return from the international break in some style as they hosted Sheffield United in a dramatic encounter on Saturday. Spurs had enjoyed life under Ange Postecoglou so far with the Australian head coach not only earning good results, but doing so with attacking football and an outlook that enamoured fans.

The best, as he put it, was yet to come from this side but it seemed as though supporters could get excited about the team that could be and where they could go under his stewardship. In the short-term though, the visit of the Blades offered a different challenge, having shown they can cause even Manchester City a tough time.

With their tactics, the visitors took the lead through Gustavo Hamer and held onto that until deep into stoppage time, where a twist was still to come. In the 98th minute, Richarlison found his way onto the end of a cross and headed home his first goal of the league season.

A point gained from a difficult situation would’ve left some pleased, compared to the alternative of losing, but there was still more to come. Richarlison was involved again as he danced his way into the box, finding Dejan Kulusevski, who took a touch to his right, shielded the ball from the defender and then stuck the ball into the back of the net to send the stadium into chaotic celebrations.

With the whistle following shortly afterwards, the Lilywhites went from the brink of defeat to the elation of victory, taking all three points with them. As usual, the national media have given their verdict on the match and how they saw the result going for Tottenham.

Reflecting on the chaos of the game, the Telegraph claimed that the “love story” around Tottenham is continuing under Postecoglou. The report said: “These are still early days with tougher tests to come, but there is a love story already gathering pace at Tottenham, who have now made their best start to a season since 1965.

“Head coach Ange Postecoglou milked the adoration of the Spurs crowd as he walked off the pitch after his players had disappeared down the tunnel and Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’, which has been reworded in his honour, blared over the stadium speakers.”

In a piece reflecting on some talking points from the game, the Mirror interestingly pointed out that it may be the first time that Tottenham missed Harry Kane following his move to Bayern Munich. “Ignore the result and the late drama for the moment,” the report states. “For 98 minutes Spurs missed Kane acutely for the first time since his departure to Bayern Munich as chances went amiss in the type of match that the England captain has so routinely thrived in.

“Spurs created plenty without ever coming that close to scoring. James Maddison was tirelessly creative, Son Heung-min worked hard, Kulusevski kept trying his luck and debutant Brennan Johnson found the net from an offside position before the added time heroics. But at that point from two dozen attempts there was no goal.”

The Daily Mail claimed that the Spurs fans must liken Postecoglou to a great being, even referencing the club as his own kingdom. The report said: “Ange Postecoglou is a man who can do no wrong in his new Tottenham kingdom.

“At least, that’s how the Australian must look to Spurs’ long-suffering fans, who have seen their new saviour’s unbeaten start to life in the Premier League now gilded by the latest of late comebacks at home to Sheffield United that turned a probable first defeat into a fourth straight win.”
