There may be no love lost between rivals West Ham and Tottenham but they share a lot in common right now.
The Hammers and Spurs both lost their homegrown heroes Declan Rice and Harry Kane over the summer.
Pundits and rival fans have doubted West Ham and Tottenham’s ability to not only replace their talismanic stars but progress without them.
And in many respects both West Ham and Tottenham had been written off before a ball had even been kicked this season.
They’re both defying the doubters, though. Both West Ham and Spurs are unbeaten thus far and are sitting pretty in the top four of the fledgling Premier League table heading into the international break.
New signings are shining under David Moyes and Ange Postecoglou winning praise from pundits and journalists alike.
Spurs are arguably playing with more panache than West Ham but in their three August games the Hammers scored one more goal (seven) than Tottenham.
Both managers undoubtedly deserve to be up for the honour alongside Jurgen Klopp, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola.
But West Ham boss Moyes must win the manager of the month gong over Tottenham’s Postecoglou for a very simple reason.
Although it is a Premier League award, Spurs’s fine start has been slightly tainted by their dismal defeat in the League Cup to Fulham to sign off August.
West Ham aren’t even in that competition at this stage due to their participation in Europe again this season.
Tottenham have drawn with Brentford, beaten a poor Man United side and beaten relegation candidates Bournemouth in August.
But West Ham’s fixtures have been much more difficult. The Hammers have seen off Chelsea 3-1 in their only home game.
They are one of the few teams to have got one over on Brighton, going away to the in-form outfit and winning 3-1.
West Ham should and could have beaten Bournemouth in the opening weekend but were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw – again away from home.
West Ham and Tottenham’s wins over Luton and Burnley respectively to start September don’t count towards this award.
It may be splitting hairs but West Ham’s tougher fixture schedule should see Moyes pip Postecoglou to the gong.
