England international Harry Kane left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window, and the club did not sign a like-for-like replacement.
Spurs ended up bringing in Wales international attacker Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest, but according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, they initially had Denmark international striker Rasmus Hojlund as their top target to replace Kane.
“Paris Saint-Germain also tried to enter the race, but the deal was never going to happen because Hojlund was already close to Manchester United,” he wrote in his exclusive column.
“But there was also another English club and that club, from what I’m hearing, was Tottenham.
“They wanted to be informed on the conditions of the deal, but it was not possible for them at that time because Harry Kane was not sold yet to Bayern Munich – Hojlund’s arrival depended on Kane’s sale, but that only happened later in the window.
“Again, though, the player’s stance was ‘let me focus on United because that’s my dream move’.”
Described by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as a ‘huge talent’, the 20-year-old finally made his debut for the Red Devils against the Gunners on Sunday having been unavailable since his arrival due to a back injury.
He scored ten goals in 34 games during his only season with Atalanta before moving to the Premier League while the former Copenhagen striker bagged 12 goals in 21 games for Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz before his move to Serie A.
