Postecoglou eyeing first-team role for ‘phenomenal’ Tottenham teenager

Tottenham Hotspur teenager Ashley Phillips is making a big impact on new boss Ange Postecoglou and will stay around the first team.

Ashley Phillips looks set to emerge into a bigger role at Tottenham Hotspur with Davinson Sanchez on his way out of the club.

That is according to Sky Sports, who claim that Phillips has ‘impressed’ Ange Postecoglou in training since his summer move from Blackburn Rovers.

Tottenham secured the signing of Phillips this summer, paying just £2million to bring the youngster in from Blackburn Rovers.

That seemed like an absolute bargain with Phillips already playing 14 first-team games for Rovers.

The 18-year-old is a huge presence at 6ft 4in tall and appears to have really impressed Postecoglou in his early weeks at Tottenham.

90min reported in August that Tottenham were expected to send Phillips out on loan for the season with first-team exposure in mind.

However, Phillips is now staying at Tottenham and is expected to have a bigger first-team role than first thought with Postecoglou sparking that loan U-turn.

Ashley Phillips in line for big role at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham made a surprise decision on Monday as they sold defender Davinson Sanchez to Turkish side Galatasaray.

Sanchez was available in the summer but the deadline passed without Tottenham bringing in a new centre back.

Spurs have still decided to flog Sanchez despite a real lack of depth at centre back – especially with Eric Dier not in Postecoglou’s plans.

An injury to Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven could give Tottenham a real problem and it looks like Phillips is being lined up for potential Premier League minutes.

We may see Ben Davies as a centre back before that happens but selling Sanchez with no replacement leaves Phillips in line for a much bigger role than anticipated.

Phillips was branded ‘phenomenal’ by Tony Mowbray at Blackburn and it looks like Postecoglou agrees with the teenager making real strides at Tottenham.
