Mac Allister joined the Reds from Brighton this summer and has settled in seamlessly. With a strong core of South American players already at the club, the Argentinian has found friends immediately.
And speaking to Liverpool’s matchday programme via liverpoolfc.com, Diaz outlined exactly why he and Alexis have hit it off.
“Alexis and I have had a good friendship from when he first arrived,” says the Colombian. “He’s been very close to me and, of course, to the other South American players – we spend a lot of time together with Darwin [Nunez] and Alisson [Becker] and all get on really well.”
Diaz also hailed Mac Allister’s abilities as a player.

“As for what Alexis brings to the team, well, he just has so much quality,” raved the 26-year-old. “He gets the team playing and he brings a real dynamism. He’s not just great with the ball but out of possession too – he always tries to ensure he’s in the right position and makes the right decision. That’s something about him that impresses me greatly.
“In the time that we’ve known each other, he’s a great guy – really chilled, very humble and down to earth and nice to get along with.”
South Americans sticking together
Right from Mac Allister’s very first day at Liverpool, you could see that he and Diaz were going to be friends. Since then, the two have been spotted together plenty.
That bodes well for a relationship that could really blossom on the pitch for the Reds.
In the wider context though, Diaz’s friendship, as well as the presence of Alisson and Nunez, has allowed ‘Macca’ to feel at home straight away.
Having been thrown straight in as part of Liverpool’s new-look midfield, Mac Allister hasn’t skipped a beat. There was the unfortunate sending off against Bournemouth which was rightfully overturned. But rather than allow that to affect his confidence, Alexis has just kept ticking on.
It’s a nice little quirk that Liverpool now have four South American first-teamers from four different countries.
Although they’ll be fierce rivals once international competition gets underway, they’re all together as one at Liverpool. Nice to see.
