Pochettino is a “huge admirer” of player Chelsea let to go Tottenham

We heard whispers last night in Matt Law’s piece that there was a crazy silly reason that Chelsea hadn’t moved to sign James Maddison from relegated Leicester City. And things get even worse the more you look at it.

Law claimed that Chelsea didn’t sign 26 year old Maddison, available for a bargain £40m, because they had a rule in place to sign only players 25 or below.

That reporting is backed up by Football Insider today, and they add that Mauricio Pochettino is a “huge admirer” of Maddison. The fact that Chelsea lost yesterday while the playmaker was instrumental in an impressive Tottenham win was salt in the wound.

One might think “OK, they signed Christopher Nkunku to play that position, so Maddison wasn’t necessary.” But then you realise we signed Cole Palmer, a far less accomplished player in the same position, on deadline day.

Make it make sense, as they say.
